Fountain Fields

In the nineteenth century Fountain Fields was a major source of water for the town, being fed from three wells via two storage tanks (one of which was known as ‘the Fountain’) to ‘the Town Spout’ (Surveyor’s report, September 1888). The area is now set out as a recreation ground with all-weather sports pitches, a bowling green and a children’s play area. Fountain Fields are opposite the police station on Queen Street (which leads up from the rear of St Michael’s Church).
